Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce on Wednesday announced that schools in Toronto, Peel and York regions will reopen for in-person learning on Feb. 16 after the province’s Family Day weekend. Those who attend schools in the remaining 13 regions that are also closed in the province will return to in-person learning on Feb. 8.

Lecce made the announcement alongside chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams.
The minister stressed they were able to reopen schools because of the "sacrifice” people made by staying at home and staying physically distanced if going out during the province-wide lockdown over the past month.

Williams also said officials “haven’t seen” schools contribute to community spread of COVID-19 previously.

Lecce cautioned if numbers trend upward, they will not hesitate to close schools again if needed.
