Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced new public health measures Monday, which include moving schools online, a ban on indoor dining, and capacity limits for businesses as the province struggles to contain the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.

Ford said schools will switch to remote learning on Wednesday for at least two weeks. The announcement came just as students were set to return to school on Jan. 5, even as parents and doctors both expressed concerns over a return while other provinces delayed their own back-to-school dates for Jan. 10 or later.

Ford made the announcement alongside Health Minister Christine Elliott and chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore.

The premier also issued several new measures and capacity limits for businesses, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 12:01 a.m. Some of the measures include: no indoor dining at restaurants, gym closures, 50 per cent capacity limits in all retail settings and personal care services, and changes to gathering limits.

These measures will be in place for at least 21 days.
