The majority of K-12 students in Alberta will be returning to in-person learning on May 25.

The only exception will be students in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Those schools will continue at-home learning for an additional week.

According to the government, COVID-19 case numbers in the region have not been trending downward at the same rate as the rest of the province, which means a likelihood of continued in-school operational challenges.

Health protocols including mask requirements, cohorts, COVID-19 symptom screening and seating arrangements will continue to be in place.

A press release from the Alberta government says: “The expansion of rapid screening testing at schools is also moving ahead as planned in Edmonton, Calgary, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie and Lethbridge, and in other communities where needed, starting next week.”

According to Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province identified 908 new cases of COVID-19 from nearly 10,400 tests over the previous 24 hours.

The province said 685 patients are in Alberta hospitals with COVID-19 and 185 of those people are in intensive care.

There were six deaths from COVID-19 reported on Wednesday.
