Ontario reported 1,824 new cases of coronavirus on Thursday, a jump in cases due to a data error for one local public health unit, bringing the provincial total to 121,746.

Thursday’s case count is an increase from Wednesday which saw 1,723 new infections. On Tuesday, 1,707 cases were recorded and 1,746 on Monday.

According to Thursday’s provincial report, 592 cases were recorded in Peel Region, 396 in Toronto, 187 in York Region and 127 in Middlesex-London. The province notes that due to a data processing error, the 127 cases for Middlesex-London Health Unit is over the last three days which affects the overall case count for Ontario on Thursday.

All other public health units in Ontario reported under 100 new cases.

Dr. David Williams, Ontario's chief medical officer of health, and Dr. Dirk Huyer, the province's chief coroner, together delivered an update on the province's COVID-19 cases on Thursday afternoon.

When asked about the possibility of bringing rapid COVID-19 testing to long-term care homes in Ontario over the holidays, Williams said putting a “wall of protection” around the vulnerable elderly population has been a provincial priority, and that a solution is being worked on “full force.”
