Greek health-care workers stopped working for a few hours on Thursday across the country to demand better working conditions during the coronavirus pandemic.

Doctors, nurses and other hospital workers gathered outside hospitals and the country's health ministry to demand job protection, salary raises and the hiring of more medical staff to fight against COVID-19.

Greece's health system is under intense pressure during the second wave of the pandemic. Intensive care unit (ICU) hospital beds in the country's north are reaching full capacity.

Military and private hospitals have been called upon to take in patients, while health-care workers in the private sector have also been asked to step in.

After a two-month lockdown in March, an abrupt spike in coronavirus cases since October forced the government to impose a second nationwide lockdown that was to expire at the end of the month. On Thursday, it was extended to Dec. 7.

The health-care workers' demonstrations were held amid a nationwide 24-hour general strike by other public sector workers.

The strike was organized by Greece's largest public sector union, ADEDY, which called for additional safety measures in hospitals and schools, more hirings of public sector workers, job protection and salary raises.

Thousands marched in Athens, despite gathering restrictions in place due to the coronavirus.

The government has announced a series of economic measures and benefits to protect workers affected by the lockdowns, and says it has further hired thousands of doctors and nurses as well as made health sector workers on contract permanent.
