Although measures to contain the coronavirus appear to have started to have an effect in Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Germany's 16 state premiers are discussing more restrictions to be implemented.

New coronavirus infections have been decreasing in recent days and the occupancy of intensive care beds of COVID-19 patients has declined by 10-15 per cent, according to Health Minister Jens Spahn.

But, the state premiers are concerned about new variants that appear to be more contagious.

People in Munich seemed to welcome the expected tougher restrictions, however, a Berlin kindergarten manager expressed concern over kids’ mental health in the pandemic and called for a vaccination program for kindergarten teachers.

Stricter requirements for companies to allow staff to work from home, compulsory wearing of heavy-duty FFP2 masks in certain areas, restrictions on public transport and the introduction of curfews are being debated.
