Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Tuesday afternoon, alongside Christine Elliott, deputy premier and Minister of Health, Finance Minister Rod Phillips and Dr. David Williams, chief medical officer of health, a new COVID-19 early warning system that would replace its modified stage approach.

The announcement comes as Ontario hit a new single-day high of COVID-19 cases ever recorded in Ontario. The province reported 1,050 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the provincial total to 78,705. According to Tuesday’s provincial report, 408 new cases were recorded in Toronto, 212 in Peel Region, 86 in Halton Region, 76 in York Region, 57 in Durham Region, 34 each in Ottawa and Hamilton, and 31 in Niagara.

With the new early warning system, Ford said a new dashboard available on Ontario's website will allow people to more easily understand where their region is at.

With the new system, Ford said Ottawa, Peel and York regions will be shifted to a Restrict level with Toronto remaining where it is for another week. This will allow indoor dining and gyms to reopen with restrictions. Brant, Durham, Halton and Hamilton regions will be moved to a Protect level.
