Pressure is mounting on Canada to ramp up its vaccine rollout, as new and more contagious variants of COVID-19 arrive in the country.

On Friday afternoon, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced on Twitter that the province had detected its first case of the South African variant of COVID-19. She said the person with the illness is in quarantine and “there’s no evidence at this time that the virus has spread to others.”

Now, fears of worsening community spread are rising in Alberta, after the more contagious variant was detected there last week.
