Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin urged Canada to "stop unwarranted speculation and smearing," a day after the Canadian government accused China of long-running air and maritime surveillance activities.

It came after report that the Canadian military had found and retrieved Chinese monitoring buoys this past fall, with Defence Minister Anita Anand saying such activity was "not new."

"China has always opposed any country's interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and has no interest in and has never interfered in Canada's internal affairs," Wang said during a briefing on Thursday.

He also criticized the U.S. for its own "speculation" and "smearing," over concerns by the U.S. that China may provide Russia with military arms for its war in Ukraine. Wang called on the U.S. to work with China and the international community to promote diplomatic negotiations to resolve the war.
