The suspected Chinese spy balloon that flew across the U.S. was able to gather intelligence from several military sites, despite the government's efforts to block it from doing so, NBC News reported on Monday. China has denied this, saying the "unmanned civilian airship" was an "accidental and isolated incident."
"China is firmly opposed to the distorted speculation and political manipulation of this accidental incident," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said in a press briefing on Tuesday.
The balloon, which Beijing denies was a government spy vessel, spent a week flying over the United States and Canada before the U.S. military shot it down off the Atlantic Coast on Biden’s orders.
