A U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee hearing on the federal response to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection took place Wednesday, with former acting defence secretary Christopher Miller, former attorney general Jeffrey Rosen and D.C. Metropolitan Police Department chief Robert Contee testifying before lawmakers.

While providing little new information, Rosen would not answer questions on whether former president Donald Trump instructed him to take any action to try to advance the unfounded claims of election fraud, saying he would not speak of private conversations with Trump, but did say he met with the former president on Jan. 3.

Responding to questions from Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch, Miller also said he was "modifying his assessment" that Trump's remarks led to the riot at the Capitol, saying based on more information being provided daily, "it seems clear that there was some sort of conspiracy where there were organized assault elements that intended to assault the Capitol that day."

Some Republican lawmakers also made comments during the hearing that Jan. 6 was not an insurrection, with Rep. Andrew Clyde suggesting that calling it an insurrection was a "bold-faced lie." He added there was video footage showing people walking through Statutory Hall while staying within ropes and taking pictures, saying, "if you didn't know the TV footage was a video from January the sixth, you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit."

Miller also responded to questions said that Trump told him that the D.C. National Guard should be activated as requested by Mayor Muriel Bowser and that the former president told him to "do whatever is necessary to protect the demonstrators that were exercising their constitutionally-protected rights."
