FBI director Christopher Wray testified on Tuesday to a U.S. Senate committee that the bureau was considering the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 as an act of "domestic terrorism" and said the agency was making every effort to investigate those involved. He praised members of the public, who had provided the FBI with more than 270,000 tips via digital media. He also said there has been more than 270 arrests to date.

The director was also questioned by senators on suggestions of "fake Trump protesters" being the instigators of the violence on Capitol Hill that day. Wray pushed back against those assertions, saying there was no evidence of that. He also said the riots involved "militia violent extremists" as well as some considered to be "racially motivated violent extremists" who advocate for white supremacy.

Wray also spoke about a Jan. 5 report from the FBI's Norfolk, Va. field office that warned of online posts foreshadowing a "war" in Washington, D.C. the following day. The former chief of the Capitol Police and others said the information wasn't flagged to them, but Wray said while he did not see the report himself until after the insurrection, it was shared properly.
