The situation has forced several shelters to close their intake, leaving many pets in need of homes.
According to Deanna Thompson, the executive director of the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS), pet abandonment numbers have reached new heights since March — making it difficult for Canadians who are already financially drained.
