Pierre Emanuel Joseph, a Black aerospace engineer in the Canadian Armed Forces, has accused Laval police of racial profiling and mistreatment after he was stopped and had his ID checked while jogging.

Joseph claimed that in 2021, during a long-distance run, he was stopped and reprimanded by Laval authorities before being arrested and having his home searched.

The military official said he was taken home in handcuffs by officers after telling them he had his military ID and uniform at home — the uniform police allegedly said was “fake.”

Following this act of “intimidation,” Joseph received a criminal sanction for obstruction, in the mail.

The experience left Joseph discouraged from taking action for a while, before going to therapy. Now, he wants to leave Quebec. Global’s Phil Carpenter reports.
