Families, Children and Social Development Minister Karina Gould spoke Tuesday about Canada's passport backlog, saying it had been "virtually eliminated" and processing times were back to pre-pandemic levels.

Canadians experienced months-long waiting periods and hours-long lines at Service Canada locations when COVID-19 restrictions eased last year, leading to a "huge influx" in demand for travel.

She said the number of applications that remain were there "for many possible reasons" and not every application results in a passport being issued. Gould stressed Canadians "can apply with confidence."
