Parliamentarians met on Monday afternoon to address the holiday travel chaos that left thousands of Canadians stranded at airports or struggling to find flights. Members voted to hold special meetings with witnesses, which will begin on Thursday.

The standing committee on transport, infrastructure and communities had met to discuss the travel delays and the treatment of air and rail passengers after thousands of Canadians faced cancellations and delays stemming from poor weather.

Liberal committee chair Peter Schiefke made the request and led the meeting, calling the treatment of Canadian travellers over the holidays “unacceptable.” He said he wants Sunwing and Via Rail before the committee to answer questions about their handling of the winter storm travel disruptions last month.

“Although weather delays are a part of winters in Canada, some of the poor service travellers received cannot be explained solely by weather. Canadians deserve better service. Canadians deserve better. Period,” Schiefke said.
