Canada will deploy two ships in July to patrol northern European waters and hunt for sea mines as part of a Latvia-based NATO mission, Defence Minister Anita Anand announced on Thursday during her visit to London, England.

She made the announcement alongside her British counterpart, Ben Wallace following talks regarding Canada's "defence priorities."

The two ships, expected to depart from Halifax on Monday, will join a NATO Mine countermeasures group that was originally established in 1973 to clear World War II mines from the English Channel.

It'll be the HMCS Shawinigan's first and the HMSC Summerside's second deployment on Operation Reassurance.

According to a press release, the defence minister is in England to advance the defence relationship between Canada and the U.K.
