Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Thursday that an assessment team had been sent by Canada to Haiti in order to determine the organization of the Haitian national police, as well as the security situation in the country.
She and her U.S. counterpart Secretary of State Antony Blinken said they were working with other countries, as well as with each other, to determine who would lead a mission to Haiti, should one occur, in response to the ongoing crises.
The pair is expected to sit down later with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to talk about: support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war by Russia, human rights in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini and the North American refugee policy. It's expected they'll also speak about the humanitarian crisis in Haiti, which has called for foreign military intervention.
Joly also announced that Canada would be seeking membership in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, saying it would further economic co-operation in the region.
