Speaking in Ottawa on Wednesday, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marc Miller announced the government will provide $362.4 million to the Interim Housing Assistance Program to help provinces and municipalities across the country in the federal government’s efforts to assist those in need.

“People around the world continue to face crises that cause them to flee their homelands, and Canada is one of many countries experiencing a significant rise in the number of people taking the life-changing step of seeking refuge at our borders,” Miller said.

“I don’t think anyone can tell you credibly what will happen in the next couple of years, but we owe it to ourselves, we owe it to Canadians,” Miller said. “We have a shared responsibility with provinces and territories in terms of welcoming people that are coming to this country, and sometime taking great risk to be here and fleeing war and oppression.”

The new funding comes after premiers and mayors called for more federal help, and Miller added that more details of how the funding will be allocated will be revealed in the coming days.
