Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday that the Canadian government would invest $199.16 million to help Resilience Biotechnologies Inc. increase manufacturing of a number of vaccines and therapeutics, including those using mRNA technology.

The federal funds will support a $401-million project with the Ontario biotech company that will help Canada prepare for possible future pandemics.

The prime minister made the announcement alongside Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne and Public Services and Procurement Minister Anita Anand and Health Minister Patty Hajdu. Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam and deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo were also in attendance.

Trudeau also announced Tuesday that Pfizer will send nine-million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine in June, paving the way for 75 per cent of Canadians to get one dose of the vaccine over the summer. He said three quarters of eligible Canadians would be vaccinated by the fall.
