Eleven days after an E. coli outbreak was declared in Calgary daycares, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced that affected families will be offered $2,000.

Smith became visibly emotional when discussing the outbreak, pausing for several seconds as she spoke about the impact on families.

"I'm heartbroken over what these families are going through," she said.

When asked where she was when the outbreak started, Smith said "It's a fair criticism. I've heard it and I'll accept for next time. I've also experienced and watched a lot of instances where politicians show up at disaster scenes and people are yelling 'We don't want you here, we want the emergency workers focused on helping us." She added, "The kids were getting the care immediately, the public health investigation began immediately."

The response comes a day after parents and families affected by the outbreak sent an open letter to Premier Danielle Smith asking, “What are you going to do to protect our most vulnerable citizens and support their families?”
