The year-long deal that has allowed Ukraine to export its grain products via the Black Sea is about to expire, and it’s unclear if Russia is prepared to allow it to be extended.

The deal was first brokered by Turkey and the U.N. a year ago to safely allow the export of Ukrainian grain products during the war. Many poorer nations in Africa and the Middle East rely on those exports for food security.

Now, after Ukrainian forces gained access to cluster munitions — controversial weapons that have been banned by countries including Canada — Russian President Vladimir Putin warns that Russia has a large stockpile of cluster bombs of their own. Putin warns that should Ukraine use the controversial weapon to regain control of its territory, Russia will respond with the same.

With the grain deal set to expire on Monday, Global’s Redmond Shannon looks at how Putin is responding and what might come next.
