Despite blaming Western sanctions for making it difficult to export grains from Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggests the Black Sea grain deal — which Russia exited in July — could be revived, so long as certain conditions are met.
Speaking with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan in Sochi on Monday, Putin, 70, said Russia will “consider the possibility of reanimating the grain deal…as soon as all the agreements on lifting restrictions on the export of Russian agricultural products are fully implemented."
The initiative, which was brokered by the United Nations (UN) with Turkey, Russia, and Ukraine in July 2022, allowed Ukraine to safely export life-saving grain supplies through the Black Sea amid the ongoing war between the latter two nations.
Erdogan, who — alongside the UN — advocated for Putin not to exit the grain deal earlier this summer, claimed Turkey will help Russia in a new deal it is implementing with less developed African countries if it complies.
Turkey’s leader also suggested Ukraine “soften its approach towards Russia” and “take mutual steps” to cooperate with its neighbouring country.
