The thousands of migrants on the European Union's eastern borders with Belarus is an attempt by Alexander Lukashenko's regime to destabilize the EU, rather than a migration crisis, the head of the executive European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the European Parliament, von der Leyen said the 27-nation bloc was standing in solidarity with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia which she said was a policy of Lukashenko to fly migrants from various world hotspots into Belarus and then push them across EU borders, an accusation which Minsk partly denies.

She said the EU was coordinating with the United States, Britain and Canada.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said following a meeting of leaders of the Visegrad Four countries in Budapest, working with partners in the Middle East and Central Asia had seen far lower numbers of migrants travelling to Belarus than a month ago.
