Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has called for “special attention” to be paid to pregnant women and children at the Poland-Belarusian border, calling the situation there a “total catastrophe.”

Belarusian authorities say more than 2,000 migrants have gathered at the border and have blamed the European Union for the crisis. Belarus and Russia say that by blocking the migrants’ passing, Poland and the EU – of which Poland is a member – have not lived up to their humanitarian values.

Migrants from the Middle East, Afghanistan and Africa made multiple attempts to force their way into Poland overnight on Wednesday, Warsaw says, announcing that it has reinforced its border to prevent their entry.

The European Union accuses Belarus of encouraging the migrants to try to illegally cross the border in revenge for sanctions imposed on Minsk over human rights abuses.
