Abbotsford mayor Henry Braun said on Thursday that 600 people had been evacuated due to flooding, including 11 who were rescued overnight.
"The floodwaters from the Nooksack River continue to flow northeasterly across the Sumas Prairie, and water levels there continue to rise toward the east of the Prairie. This is a situation that we are very closely monitoring," Braun said.
Police Chief Mike Serr said there were still 40 people in the evacuation order area in Sumas Prairie.
Braun also said the Barrowtown pump station, which is facing a surge of water from Washington state’s Nooksack River, is working at full capacity and is holding so far.
The mayor added he is not concerned about rainfall in Thursday’s weather forecast, but is worried about next week, which forecasts 80 to 100 millimetres of rain.
