Abbotsford police are urging residents to follow the city’s evacuation order, adding that failure to do so is putting a strain on resources as they deal with ongoing catastrophic flooding.

“This is changing so quickly that you may think you’re okay in one minute and, literally, half an hour later you’ll see a change in water levels,” says Chief Mike Serr.

Torrential rain has drenched much of British Columbia on Monday and Sunday as an atmospheric river descended on the province.

However, Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun said flooding in Abbotsford was coming from the Nooksack river in the U.S., which spilled its banks on Monday causing historic flooding.

He said the city is not receiving enough information from the U.S. to know when the floodwaters will stop inundating the city.
