Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun said on Saturday that floodgates have partially opened at the Barrowtown Pump Station and started releasing water from the Sumas River to the Fraser River.
The mayor said that was “good news” as flow breaching the Sumas River dike has lessened.
Officials hope that water levels will continue to decrease so the flood gates can remain open, and potentially, open fully.
"This is a good start, and every little bit helps." The mayor said in a briefing.
The city remains under a state of local emergency, with massive flooding in the Sumas Prairie agricultural area.
