Numerous dignitaries and speakers, including United States Vice President Kamala Harris, and former United States President George W. Bush, were in attendance in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on Saturday morning to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in the crash of United Airlines flight 93 some twenty years ago.

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, 19 members of al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group led by Osama bin Laden, hijacked four commercial airliners, flying two into the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Center, while another was crashed into the Pentagon, in Arlington, Va.

The fourth jet was brought down by the passengers on board, crashing in a field near Shanksville, Pa., before it could reach the hijackers’ apparent target — the U.S. Capitol or the White House in Washington, D.C.

A solemn ceremony was held to mark the lives lost when United 93 crashed in Shanksville - and reflect, some twenty years later, on the world they left behind.
