Winter weather: Why Canada's in a cold snap despite El Niño

The winter started with talk of El Niño bringing in milder weather than a typical Canadian weather, but now the country is seeing extremely cold temperatures with Albertans even dealing with electric grid alerts.

Some of the issue has to do with the jet stream, a region of high winds that blow west to east across the globe and usually confined to the north, and El Niño's impact on that wind. But now that stream has pushed south, bringing in colder northern air and leaving many people shivering.

Our Sean Previl explains why we're seeing such dramatic fluctuations and when we can expect a return to more normal or even warmer temperatures.
