Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson spoke alongside Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham on Thursday afternoon at City Hall to announce operations at Prairie Green Landfill will pause to allow for the assessment of a full forensic operation.

Gillingham added that the next steps must not jeopardize the criminal investigation and must be informed by Indigenous leaders.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC), alongside Long Plain First Nation Chief Kyra Wilson, called for Winnipeg's Chief of Police to step down Thursday, due to the police service’s refusal to search the Prairie Green Landfill for remains of three victims of an alleged serial killer.

Jeremy Skibicki has been charged with first-degree murder in those deaths. He was previously charged with first-degree murder in the death of Rebecca Contois, whose remains were found earlier this year at the Brady Road landfill.
