New York Mayor Eric Adams spoke Wednesday, giving an update on the subway shooting in Brooklyn that occurred Tuesday, saying that the suspect had been taken into custody, adding "we got him."

New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said it was a Crimestoppers tip that led to him being taken into custody.

Frank R. James, 62, is accused in the Tuesday attack on a crowded rush-hour train. Five people were in critical condition after the morning shooting, but all 10 gunshot victims were expected to survive.

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Breon Peace, announced the charge against James at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. According to Peace, he could face a sentence of up to life in prison if convicted.

New York City Police Chief of Detectives James Essig detailed how the suspect in the Brooklyn subway shooting changed from being a person of interest to the a "wanted individual". He also detailed the various aspects of the investigation, including that the gun recovered from the scene of the shooting had been purchased by the suspect in 2011. He said the suspect was known to police.

Essig, asked Wednesday about several social media videos posted by the suspect in the subway shooting Tuesday, said that the investigation was still ongoing into the motive and their focus had been about getting him the suspect off the streets. He also said social media videos were also part of the investigation.

The gunman sent off smoke grenades in a crowded subway car on Tuesday and then fired at least 33 shots with a 9 mm handgun, police said.

The shooter escaped in the chaos, but left behind numerous clues, including the gun, ammunition magazines, a hatchet, smoke grenades, gasoline and the key to a U-Haul van.

That key led investigators to James, a New York City-area native who had more recent addresses in Philadelphia and Wisconsin.
