Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has named Mary Simon, an Inuit leader, as Canada’s first Indigenous governor general.

The 74-year-old is renowned for her work on the Arctic, and her fierce advocacy for Indigenous rights and culture. She’s also spent much of her career pushing for increased access to health care, mental health services and better education.

Simon’s appointment fills the vacancy left by Julie Payette, who resigned in January, and comes at a critical moment for Canada’s relationship with Indigenous people. David Akin takes a look at her career and the challenges she may still face in the role.
