Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke at a ceremony on Sunday where members of the London, Ont. Muslim community and many others gathered to remember the Afzaal family, who were killed one year ago.

"We remember them," Trudeau said, speaking about the family and what those who knew them told him in the discussions he had.

He also spoke about the need to not be complacent, stating that Canadians should not "turn our backs on the lived reality of millions of Canadians who live with microaggression and discrimination and systemic racism every single day."

The prime minister also spoke about why he believes "words matter" and said society needs to go "beyond tolerance" and work on acceptance. Words can lead to actions, he said.

Four of the five members of the Afzaal family were killed while out for a walk after dinner. That evening, a young white man allegedly drove his truck into the family, killing four of them and injuring the young son, who was seriously hurt but survived. Prosecutors have said it was an act of terrorism. The trial is set to take place in the fall of 2023.
