Democrats are pursuing a quick impeachment a week after President Donald Trump gave a speech they say incited insurrection. On Jan. 6, while Congress was in the process of counting Electoral Votes and certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s win, a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol, clashed with police, and forced lawmakers to pause their sessions and evacuate to safety.
Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., said the week since the attack has been “devastating” for the U.S., but did not agree that Congress should focus on impeaching Trump in the aftermath of violence. He instead recommended that lawmakers focus on establishing a bipartisan national commission to focus on the Capitol attack, saying it was vital to understand “why the security apparatus failed, and how we can ensure it never happens again.”
“For the first time, can the House Democrats and the speaker of the House put the people before politics?” Smith asked. “This is a reckless impeachment.”
