Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., argued for the impeachment of President Donald Trump for inciting a violent insurrection.

Democrats are pursuing a quick second impeachment a week after Trump gave a speech they say incited insurrection. On Jan. 6, while Congress was in the process of counting electoral votes and certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s win, a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol, clashed with police, and forced lawmakers to pause their sessions and evacuate to safety.

In a Jan. 13 hearing, Raskin highlighted the violent actions and intentions of the rioters, emphasizing that “they could have killed us all.” He criticized some members of the far-right who have asked Trump to pardon the rioters, saying, “It’s a bit much hearing that these people would not be trying to destroy our government and kill us if we just weren’t so mean to them.”

Raskin cited a statement by Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., yesterday as the best articulation of what happened on Jan. 6. Cheney, the third-ranking Republican in the House, said in the statement she would vote to impeach Trump. “There has never been a greater betrayal by a president of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution,”
