Michael van der Veen, one of Trump’s lawyers, spoke Feb. 13 as House impeachment managers and former President Donald Trump’s defense team offered their final cases in Trump’s second impeachment trial. The Senate will vote on whether to convict Trump on a charge of inciting an insurrection for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.

Van der Veen held that the House managers were attacking Trump on a partisan basis, adding, “The Senate does not have to go down this dark path of anonymity and division. You do not have to indulge.” He said a Trump acquittal would allow the nation to move forward and address the pandemic, economy and racial inequality, economic and social inequality, and begin the healing process.
