WATCH: Highlights from Trump’s Senate Impeachment Trial - Day 3

On day 3 of Trump’s second impeachment trial, House Democrats presented evidence showing how powerful the former president’s influence was over the people who attacked the Capitol building and argued that he was aware that his words could lead to violence. The House managers outlined the questions they would have asked the president if he had appeared in the trial, including why did he not move more swiftly to stop and condemn the attack.

Trump was impeached by the House last month while still in office, the first president ever to be impeached twice, on a single charge of incitement of insurrection. It was a largely party-line vote, but 10 Republicans joined Democrats in condemning the president. The first day of the Senate trial was spent debating whether lawmakers had authority to convict a president who is no longer in office, a power supported by many conservative and liberal law scholars. Six Republican lawmakers sided with Democrats in voting to proceed with the trial. Democrats will need to win over more Republicans for a conviction, which requires a two-thirds majority vote.
