David Schoen, one of former President Donald Trump’s lawyers, refuted claims by Democrats that the impeachment trial can help bring unity to the country.
“They don’t want unity, and they know this so-called trial will tear the country in half, leaving tens of millions of Americans feeling left out of the nation’s agenda,” Schoen said, accusing the Democratic House impeachment managers of treating the impeachment process as a “blood sport.”
The Senate is holding an impeachment trial to examine Trump’s culpability in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by a violent mob of his supporters. Many Republicans have said the trial should not go forward because Trump is no longer in office, an argument that is a key piece of Trump's defense, but Democrats are arguing to proceed.
