The father of the 6-year-old boy who was murdered in an anti-Muslim hate crime says he wants his son to be an "avenue that solves" the Israel-Hamas conflict.
"I am the father of a child whose rights were violated and there are families in Palestine who I think, should understand what I’m saying," Odey Al-Fayoume said during a news conference Monday.
The Illinois man, accused of fatally stabbing the boy and seriously wounding his mother, was charged Sunday with a hate crime.
The Will County Sheriff's office says the boy, identified as Wadea Al-Fayoume, and his mother, Hanaan Shahin, were targeted for being Muslim and in response to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
Cities across the United States have increased patrols, with law enforcement on high alert for violence due to increases in antisemitic and Islamophobic rhetoric.
A funeral service for Wadea Al-Fayoume was held Monday at the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview, Illinois.
