On the one-year anniversary of signing a bill aimed to stop COVID-19-motivated hate crimes, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland outlined on Friday three steps the Department of Justice will take to address hate crimes.

This includes new guidance on raising awareness of hate crimes during the pandemic, as well as hiring a language access coordinator and providing $10 million in grant solicitations for new programs to address hate crimes.

This also follows the racially-motivated mass shooting in Buffalo, N.Y. that killed 10 people and injured three others last Saturday.

An 18-year-old white teenager, who pleaded not guilty, has been accused of opening fire with a semi-automatic rifle in a predominantly Black neighbourhood of Buffalo.
