Del. Stacey Plaskett, D-Virgin Islands, spoke Feb. 10 as House Democrats made their case for why the Senate should convict former President Donald Trump on a charge of inciting insurrection during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.

Plaskett said Trump deliberately incited the insurrection. “He knew the people he was inviting, he knew the violence they were capable of,” she said, referring to his promotion of the “Save America” rally on Jan. 6 prior to the insurrection. She cited posts on public websites supporting Trump, planning the attack on the Capitol, and changing protest permits after his team became involved in planning the rally.

She said he has a pattern of encouraging violence rather than condemning it.
