President Joe Biden touted his administration's progress on infrastructure during his March 1 State of the Union address, nodding to the 4,000 projects already planned and announcing plans to start fixing more than 65,000 miles of highways and 1,500 bridges across the country.

He commended members of both parties for passing his infrastructure plan, saying it was “the most sweeping investment to rebuild America in history.”

“It is going to transform America to put us on a path to win the economic competition of the 21st century that we face with the rest of the world - particularly China,” Biden said.

It was among the legislative victories Biden highlighted during his speech. To standing ovations from largely Democrats and “boos” from some Republicans, Biden compared his American Rescue Plan to President Donald Trump’s tax cuts: Unlike the $2 trillion tax package passed by his predecessor, which "benefitted the top 1 percent of Americans," Biden said, his bill "“helped working people - and left no one behind."

Biden delivered his first official State of the Union address amid a Russian invasion into Ukraine, continued challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic and an economy dominated by inflation despite gains in wages and unemployment.
