In his 2024 State of the Union address, President Joe Biden said America is "strong and getting stronger," a variation on a phrase often used to describe the country in these annual addresses. President Gerald Ford first used the phrase "the state of the union is ..." in his 1975 remarks to Congress when he said, “the state of the union is not good.” Since then, most presidents, including Biden in his last two addresses, have described it as "strong." In his last State of the Union appearance in 2020, former President Donald Trump said America was "stronger than ever before."
