Speaking during the State of the Union address, U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that the U.S. military will construct a temporary port on Gaza's Mediterranean coast to receive humanitarian aid by sea.

Planning for the operation, initially based on the island of Cyprus, does not envisage the deployment of U.S. military personnel in Gaza, officials have said. Biden's decision to order the construction of the temporary port comes amid United Nations warnings of widespread famine among the enclave's 2.3 million Palestinians, nearly five months after Israel began its offensive on Gaza.

He also criticized his predecessor, former president Donald Trump, for "bowing down" to Russia, as Biden reiterated support for Ukraine.

"Now my predecessor, a former Republican president, tells Putin, quote, 'Do whatever you want,'" Biden said. "I think it's outrageous, it's dangerous and it's unacceptable."
