U.S. president-elect Joe Biden on Thursday spoke about the Capitol building riot the previous Wednesday and said the crowds who stormed the Capitol were a “riotous mob.” He then went on to lambaste President Donald Trump, saying Trump was “inciting a mob” to stop Congress from ratifying “the will of the American people."

He also compared the response by law enforcement during the anti-racism protests in 2020 to what was seen in Washington, D.C. He said that “no one can tell me” if it had been a Black Lives Matter (BLM) protest, they “wouldn’t have been treated very, very differently than the mob of thugs who stormed the Capitol.” He said it was “totally unacceptable.”

Biden made the comments during a press conference in which he also announced some of his key picks for the Justice Department.

He announced Merrick Garland as his pick for attorney general and stressed to his nominees for the Justice Department, including Garland, that “you won’t work for me, you are not the president’s or the vice-president’s lawyer.” He added their loyalty is to the law, not to him. He also named Lisa Monaco as deputy attorney general.
