Lori Campbell, associate vice-president of Indigneous engagement with the University of Regina, reflected on Tuesday following the rescindment of an honourary doctorate of laws degree bestowed to Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond in 2003.

In a Monday statement, the University of Regina said it had rescinded an honorary doctor of laws degree it bestowed on Turpel-Lafond in 2003.

The school said the decision came following a request from the Indigenous Women’s Collective to revoke such degrees.

Campbell said claiming Indigenous heritage where there is none robs Indigenous candidates from being recognized for their achievement, minimizes their lived experience, and minimizes the impact of colonization in her opinion.
