The UN Security Council is trying to reach a compromise to pause the fighting in Gaza. An initial draft resolution called for "an urgent and lasting cessation of hostilities to allow unimpeded access of humanitarian aid". Negotiators are now seeking a compromise acceptable to the US — which has blocked previous calls for a cease-fire. International pressure on Israel to end hostilities has grown as Gaza faces a deepening humanitarian crisis.
