The British government has pushed a plan through Parliament to slash the foreign aid budget.
That is despite a rebellion by a group of MPs from the governing Conservative Party.
The government maintains it needs to suspend a legal obligation to spend 0.7 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) on aid to help rein in public borrowing; it has ballooned to World War II levels during the coronavirus pandemic.
The UK has been one of the world's leading foreign aid donors, the first G7 country to enshrine in law an international commitment to give away 0.7 percent of GDP.
