Averting a planned strike at midnight, the union representing nearly 12,000 Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) workers announced a last-minute framework settlement on Thursday evening, avoiding a crippling shutdown of buses, streetcars and subway trains.

"This is a fair deal that is affordable to the TTC and respectful of the important work the 11,500 members of ATU Local 113 do every day,” said in an official statement.”

The main sticking points for the union had been job security and benefits for active members and pensioners. The union says it will continue to work through the details to arrive at a fair and reasonable contract.

Details of the deal are not being released with the settlement still needing to be ratified by union members and the TTC board.

For commuters, full TTC services will proceed as planned on Friday.
